What is swaddling?

Swaddling is the technique of gently wrapping a newborn in a swaddle to create a sense of containment and security. When done correctly, it helps reduce startling and promotes more peaceful sleep, without restricting the baby's legs.

  • Head always free
  • Legs with freedom of movement
  • Comfortable fit, never tight

The Moro reflex and newborn sleep

The Moro reflex is an involuntary reflex common in the first few months. It can cause a sudden startle, with arms opening and immediate waking, even when the baby was sleeping well.

By gently wrapping their arms, the swaddle helps contain this jerky movement and reduce awakenings. This reflex tends to diminish between 2 and 4 months, at which point swaddling should be discontinued.

When to start and when to stop using swaddling?

When to start?

Swaddling can be practiced from the first days of life. It is in the first months that the Moro reflex is most present and that the baby benefits most from the feeling of containment.

When to stop?

you should stop swaddling as soon as your baby shows signs of wanting to roll onto their tummy. This usually happens between 2 and 4 months, but it can vary. The reason is simple: if the baby rolls over with their arms swaddled, they won't be able to reposition themselves, which poses a safety risk.

Swaddles: Frequently Asked Questions

Yes, as long as safety recommendations are followed: always put the baby to sleep on their back, do not over-tighten (two fingers should fit between the fabric and the chest), leave the legs free, and stop using it when the baby starts to roll over. Do not use hats or excessive clothing under the swaddle.

In practice, many people use the terms interchangeably. A swaddle is a large, soft muslin cloth designed to wrap around the baby and for multiple daily uses.

Yes. Bamboo is breathable and helps with thermal comfort. The ideal is to adjust the baby's clothing underneath and avoid excessive layers.

Machine wash at 30°C, with mild detergent and no fabric softener. Air dry. Bamboo retains its softness wash after wash.

A good swaddle should be at least 120cm x 120cm to allow for comfortable wrapping. My Baby Box swaddles are 120x120cm, designed to facilitate the technique and adapt to the baby's growth in the first few months.

For daily use, 2 to 4 swaddles are usually a good number, to alternate between washes and outings.

Not all babies like swaddling - and that's perfectly fine. Some prefer to have their arms free or near their face. Try variations (arms in or out) and observe your baby's reaction. If it doesn't work, a sleep sack can be a comfortable alternative.
