When and How to Pack Your Hospital Bag: Essential Tips for Choosing and Organizing Baby Clothes

Quando e Como Preparar a Mala da Maternidade: Dicas Essenciais para Escolher e Organizar a Roupa do Bebé

Packing your hospital bag is one of the most special rituals of pregnancy. It marks the beginning of the final stretch and brings with it a sense of anticipation and care—the baby is almost here, and everything needs to be ready for him or her.

But when is the right time to pack your suitcase? What kind of suitcase to take? And how to prepare your baby's clothes with the care they deserve? In this article, we've gathered everything you need to know to get organized with peace of mind.

When to start packing your hospital bag?

Ideally, you should have your bag packed between 32 and 34 weeks of pregnancy . From this point on, the baby can be born at any time, and having everything organized avoids unnecessary stress. It also gives you time to think about the details, confirm with the maternity hospital what is and isn't provided, and ensure nothing important is left behind.

What is the most practical type of suitcase?

There's no single right option, but it's worth opting for something functional, lightweight, and with compartments that make organization easier. Here are some suggestions:

  • Suitcase type travel bag or small trolley , easy to carry.
  • Maternity backpack , with several internal pockets.
  • Traditional maternity bag , with space divided by categories (clothes, hygiene, etc.).

It is advisable to separate the contents into parts - for example, complete sets of clothing already grouped in fabric bags or transparent bags, numbered, ready to be used.

How to prepare baby clothes?

Newborn skin is extremely sensitive, so all items that will come into contact with the baby should be washed before first use . Here are the main recommendations:

  • Use neutral detergent or detergent suitable for baby clothes , without perfumes or harsh additives.
  • Avoid fabric softeners – many contain fragrances and chemicals that can cause irritation.
  • Wash at the temperature indicated on the labels , generally between 30°C and 40°C, to preserve the softness of the fabrics.
  • Remove all interior labels from the garments , which may cause discomfort or friction.

💡 In our store, all items come with this care in mind: we don't include interior labels and, in many cases, we opt for interior stamps, designed for baby's comfort.

What materials to choose?

Whenever possible, opt for 100% cotton or natural materials , especially for items that will be in direct contact with your baby's skin, such as bodysuits, footed pants, hats, and cloth diapers. Soft, breathable, and certified fabrics are always a safe choice.

Avoid synthetic fabrics or polyester blends in the first few weeks, as they increase the risk of allergies and make it difficult for your baby to regulate their temperature.

Organization with intention

  • Separate your clothes into bags, by sets, and label each change by day or situation (for example, “first change”, “change for returning home”, etc.).
  • Always carry 1 or 2 extra sets - unforeseen events are part of the equation.

Packing your hospital bag is a time of love, but also filled with questions - so if you'd like to share how you packed yours or have any extra tips, let us know in the comments!

We'd love to hear about this special moment for you.
